About Us

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is a unique place, one of only a handful of urban wildlife refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Thanks to the combined efforts of local residents and the US Fish & Wildlife Service, this land was set aside as a refuge in 1992. Ever since, our staff has been working hard to turn the land back to a more natural state within the floodplain of the Tualatin River basin. We manage the Refuge to mimic the natural seasonal cycle, so whatever the season, you’ll see many kinds of wildlife here.  Our efforts are paying off! The Refuge has become a key stopping point on the Pacific Flyway as migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds by the thousands discover this rich and varied resource. Several more species are appearing each year. The Refuge is part of your community. Take the time to discover and enjoy the wildlife who live here, and the habitats that support them.

Extended Learning Session

Thursday February 9^th, 9:30-11:00am
Habitat Management & Restoration
Refuge Manager Erin Holmes will give a presentation on the successes and challenges of habitat management. She will also address the importance of local habitats in restoration projects.

Restoration Work Party
Saturday February 11^th, 9:00am-12:00pm
South Claus Habitat Enhancement
Volunteers will prune tree branches during this work party. We will meet at Refuge headquarters and carpool to the South Claus unit, where trees were planted too densely by the previous land owners. We will cut branches to provide access for Refuge staff to return and thin out the trees.
Please bring water, sturdy shoes, and gloves if you have them. Please also be advised there is poison oak in the area.

The MARCH! Sherwood Gazette is officially in production!   There is something about the month of March that just gets me moving and I hope you feel the same way too!

The March edition will be in homes by March 1.  Our deadlines are as follows:

Copy and Space reservations due:  February 13^{th @} 5pm

Camera Ready art due: February 21^{st @}    5pm

Press Day: February 23^rd @ Noon

March is the beginning of the end of the long dark days and hopefully the cold.   Of course, St. Patrick’s days is a big darn deal and a great idea to build your March advertising message upon.  Who doesn’t enjoy a little “Luck o’ the Irish” or whimsy?   Home improvement, spring sports, outdoor activities, spring carnivals & programs, and “stay-cation” activities are on everyone’s radar.  And let’s not forget the every popular St. Paddy’s Day celebration….if you’re having one….get it in the paper!

March also brings along tax season, financial planning (to reduce the pain of taxes) and home buying.   Get a little green in your bank account and those of your customers with some creative advertising!
